The University of La Laguna and the Fondation Université et Hôpitaux Universitaires de Strasbourg have formalized an academic and scientific cooperation agreement aimed at promoting research, knowledge transfer and the development of joint projects linked to wine tourism and the enhancement of wine heritage.
The signing of this agreement has been promoted by the Chair of Agritourism and Wine Tourism of the Canary Islands from the Canary Institute of Agri-food Quality and the University of La Laguna, together with the Chair of Wine and Tourism (Wine and Tourism Chair) of the University of Strasbourg, an entity supported by the Fondation Université et Hôpitaux Universitaires de Strasbourg.
The collaboration establishes a stable working framework between both institutions with the aim of strengthening academic and scientific exchange on wine, tourism and the sustainable development of rural and wine-growing territories.
The Strasbourg Chair of Wine and Tourism has established itself as a European benchmark in the study of wine as a cross-cutting element of European culture, integrating advanced scientific research with heritage management strategies in Alsace, one of the most renowned wine regions on the continent.
For its part, the Canary Islands Chair of Agritourism and Wine Tourism has developed a trajectory focused on the valorization of the archipelago's primary sector through tourism, contributing to the professionalization of the wine tourism offer in a context marked by the heroic and volcanic agriculture characteristic of the islands.
Both institutions share lines of action linked to applied research on the socio-economic impact of wine tourism, the sustainability of agricultural landscapes and the preservation of local varieties and traditional cultivation techniques as differentiating elements within international competitiveness.
Furthermore, the two entities have performed advisory and institutional leadership functions in agricultural and tourism policies for their respective regional governments, consolidating their role as centers of reference in innovation and territorial development.
The agreement will allow the combination of the continental European experience of Strasbourg, especially in areas related to the wine-health pairing and the management of historical routes, with the knowledge developed in the Canary Islands on Atlantic wines, agricultural resilience and adaptation of island production systems to climate change.
The main planned actions include the development of joint scientific publications and technical manuals, the exchange of researchers and postgraduate students, as well as cooperation in the design of quality standards applied to wine tourism services.
The alliance also envisions joint applications to European funding programs such as Horizon Europe and Erasmus+, with the aim of expanding international cooperation and generating new innovation opportunities for the sector.
Within this long-term collaboration strategy, both institutions foresee the creation of a future Strasbourg-Canary Islands Wine Tourism Innovation Hub, conceived as a permanent platform for the transfer of technology, knowledge and talent between both territories.
With this agreement, the institutions involved reinforce their commitment to academic internationalization, sustainability and the promotion of tourism and wine development models based on research and institutional cooperation.
