The La Capilla Cultural Space of the University of La Laguna, located in the courtyard of the Central Building, hosted yesterday, Wednesday, May 20, the inauguration of the exhibition of the Nomadic Museum of Photography “Photographic devices: cameras, images, magazines”, which can be visited until June 12th.
The event was attended by the director of the Secretariat for Cultural Development and Library, Isabel Castells Molina, and the two curators of the exhibition: the professor from the Department of Art History and Philosophy Carmelo Vega de la Rosa and the collector and promoter of photography José María Mercader Torreiro.
This exhibition presents a collection of photographic materials from different historical periods, organized into four main sections: “The Camera,” with a selection of cameras from the late 19th and early 20th centuries; “Stereoscopic Visions,” with a collection of cameras, viewers, and photographs related to the development of three-dimensional images; “The Portrait: Studio Faces,” with several collections of photographic portraits in various formats and presentations, studio advertising backs, and portrait albums, dating from 1850 to the first decades of the 20th century; and “Photography Magazines in Spain,” which includes an anthology of photography magazines published in Spain from the late 19th century to the present day.
The Nomadic Museum of Photography is an alternative, collaborative, and independent museum project that aims to formulate and channel diverse collaborative actions between collecting practices and research in the field of photography as a historical, aesthetic, and cultural phenomenon over the last two centuries. It is structured as a container (without spaces or walls) for proposals, activities, ideas, and experiences linked to the development of the history of photography, offering a critical reading of photographic productions, techniques, and trends from their origins to the present day.
