The 60th edition of the local phase of the Spanish Mathematical Olympiad for the university districts of the Canary Islands was held today, Friday, January 19th. Fifty-three students from 25 schools in the province of Las Palmas and 44 students from 17 schools in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife participated in the competition, which took place at five island venues: the Mathematics and Physics Department building of the Faculty of Sciences at the University of La Laguna (Tenerife), the IES San Diego de Alcalá (Fuerteventura), the School of Computer Engineering at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Gran Canaria), the IES Luis Cobiella Cuevas (La Palma), and the IES Costa Teguise (Lanzarote).

The test consisted of solving six math problems in two sessions of three and a half hours each, and is aimed at students enrolled in the current Baccalaureate course and, exceptionally, in the third and fourth year of Compulsory Secondary Education when endorsed by their teachers and they stand out for their abilities.

The Royal Spanish Mathematical Society will award the three winners from each province with a certificate and an annual student membership fee, which entitles them, among other benefits, to access the magazine La Gaceta published by the entity for one year.

Following the competition, a team of three students will be selected to represent the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands in the final phase of the LX Spanish Mathematical Olympiad, which will be held in Calatayud (Zaragoza) between March 14 and 17, 2024.
