Wooptix, the ULL spin-off, presents its latest advances at the Spanish Optical Design Meeting

Wednesday 07 de February de 2024 - 14:10 CET

A spin-off is a business initiative promoted by members of the university community that bases its activity on the exploitation of new processes, products, or services derived from the knowledge acquired and the results obtained within the academic institution itself. The University of La Laguna has several companies of this type, and one of them is Wooptix, an expert in optical metrology, will present her latest data on the wavefront sensor at the Spanish Optical Design Meeting (ESODM 24), which will take place tomorrow, Thursday, February 8, at INtech La Laguna, the building where this company has its main headquarters.

Under the title "Compact and versatile wavefront sensor for current and emerging challenges", Ricardo Oliva, PhD and computer vision manager at Wooptix, will provide the most relevant information on the results obtained with the smallest version of the technology that Wooptix uses in semiconductors.

In Oliva's own words, "Current challenges in the field of wavefront sensors focus on expanding and adapting their application to diverse scientific disciplines, especially medicine and microscopy." These sensors allow the visualization of transparent and reflective samples, essential for medical advancements. "To address these challenges, it is necessary to design new devices that can be adapted to diverse environments, overcoming the traditional trade-off between noise, resolution, and data acquisition speed," the expert states.

Thus, he explains that these challenges require developing instruments capable of acquiring and presenting information in real time, “demonstrating versatility to apply the same sensor to different problems,« he adds. The Wooptix presentation will also address the future of wavefront sensors. On this subject, Oliva mentions that they are working on improving electronic devices to increase accuracy, and he particularly highlights the development of sensors designed for nonlinear optical systems.

The spin-off from the University of La Laguna also faces challenges in the miniaturization and portability of devices, as well as in the integration of advanced algorithms for multivariate data processing and machine learning, “with the aim of analyzing the data obtained more efficiently and quickly. That is why we present samples the size of nanometers (5000 nanometers is 0.005 millimeters),« he concludes.

He Spanish Meeting of Optical Design It is organized by Tina E Kidger, of Kidger Optics Associates, UK, in association with Sergio Bonaque González, PhD from the University of La Laguna and member of Wooptix.

José Manuel Rodríguez, a researcher at the University of La Laguna (ULL), is the company's CEO.

The sponsors of this fifth Spanish Optical Design Meeting are IACTec, ZEISS, ASE Optics Europe, Wooptix, Edmund Optics Worldwide, Kidger Optics Assoc., and SYNOPSYS. Magna Congresos and Sedoptica are cooperating organizations.

About Wooptix

Wooptix is a spin-off company from the University of La Laguna, a leader in optical metrology using wavefront phase imaging, a technique derived from adaptive optics in astronomy. Since the early 2000s, this company has been improving and optimizing the proprietary algorithms used in the WFPI (Wavefront Phase Imaging) technique.

The company has developed the SEBI® RT1000, a wavefront phase camera that introduces exceptionally high phase sampling (1,000 x 1,000), real-time processing (30 FPS), and absolute wavefront accuracy (λ/30 RMS) for the most challenging measurement tasks. Wooptix is headquartered in Tenerife, Madrid, and San Francisco (USA).
