A weekend of comedy at the Paraninfo, with Abubukaka's new show and a monologue by Ángel Martín.

Thursday February 29, 2024 - 10:02 CET

Humor takes center stage in this weekend's program at the Paraninfo of the University of La Laguna, with the presentation of the new show by the group Abubukaka, adapting "The Name of the Rose" in a comedic style on Friday, March 1, and a monologue focused on mental health by Ángel Martín on Sunday the 3rd, which has already sold out.

Abubukaka will bring their unique version of "The Name of the Rose" to the university stage this Friday, March 1st at 9:00 PM, with Tickets on sale Online from 15 euros. As the Tenerife-based theater group explains, this adaptation “will respect the framework of the novel’s two plots, but will fill them with earthly grace.”.

Thus, while the murders that punctuate the plot are investigated, the Franciscan cause, which constituted the second thematic aspect of Umberto Eco's text, is also addressed, giving it a twist to truly speak of the value of knowledge and, in doing so, connect with a present immersed in fake news, fabrications, and hoaxes. Abubukaka views the source of truth through the lens of William of Baskerville to verify which sources are reliable and, only then, pass judgment. All of this is done through comedy because, as the novel itself says, "laughter kills fear, and without fear there can be no faith, because without fear of the devil there is no longer any need for God.".

Meanwhile, the show by renowned comedian Ángel Martín, "Punto para los locos" (Point for the Crazy Ones), is scheduled for Sunday, March 3rd at 6:00 PM, and has been a huge success with audiences, as tickets have been sold out for days. Using humor as its central theme, the monologue champions the importance of mental health support, reminding us that there are tools that can help when "the voices" resonate strongly and fill people's heads with shame, fear, and anxiety. The story stems from the psychotic episode Martín suffered in 2017, the recovery process of which he has since chronicled through two books and his monologues.
