Rosa Montero is participating today at the ULL in the Tenerife Noir International Seminar on Noir Genre

Wednesday 06 de March de 2024 - 09:26 CET

The eighth edition of the Tenerife Noir International Seminar on Research in the Crime Fiction Genre at the University of La Laguna begins today, Wednesday, March 6, in the Audiovisual Room of the Philology Department. However, this afternoon at 7:00 p.m., the activities will move to the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Economics, Business, and Tourism to welcome writer and journalist Rosa Montero, who will speak about journalism, literature, and memory. The positive response to this event and the anticipation generated by the author's visit led to the selection of a different venue than initially planned, a space with greater capacity to accommodate the audience during the discussion.

“The doors of the University of La Laguna are open so that the general public, not only those participating in academic activities, can have a direct encounter with an author of Rosa Montero’s stature this Wednesday, as will also happen on Thursday, March 7, with Leonardo Padura,” reports Javier Rivero Grandoso, director of this annual research event and of the Antonio Lozano Cultural Chair of Criminal Gender at the University of La Laguna.

The academic and research conference, organized by Tenerife Noir and the aforementioned Chair, explores the reflection of individual and collective memory in various artistic expressions, such as literature, film, theater, and even photobooks, among others. Registration closed, as all available places were filled before the deadline.

This eighth edition of the seminar takes a monographic approach to “individual and collective memory and ideology in the crime genre, two elements that are often very important and intertwined within the genre,” explains the professor. Although the presentations revolve around a single central theme, the inquisitive perspective of the research offers a diverse range of topics, works, and authors, leading to
a “fairly broad program” and covers such disparate issues as several presentations on ETA terrorism – also seen in French narrative – or the approach to Mexico by the writer Yuri Hernández.

First day

The program for the first day begins at 3:30 p.m. with registration and the opening ceremony. From 4:30 p.m. to 6:55 p.m. on Wednesday, the 6th, the first two sessions of presentations will take place in the Audiovisual Room of the Faculty of Philology. Following these sessions, the day will conclude with a round table discussion at 7:00 p.m. entitled "Memory, Journalism, and Literature: An Encounter with Rosa Montero," moderated by two of the university professors on the seminar organizing team, Fermín Domínguez Santana and Javier Rivero Grandoso.

The first session of presentations begins with a talk by Celia Vega Pérez (Complutense University of Madrid) entitled «The Memory of the Territory: The Scenes of ETA Attacks Photographed by Eduardo Nave in the Project 'At the Time, in the Place (2008-2013)‘’. This is followed by Diego Muñoz Carrobles (University of Alcalá) with »ETA Terrorism as Narrative Material for French Crime Fiction: The Case of Marin Ledun«.

The second session of communications, starting at 6:00 PM, features Rafael Fernando Bermúdez Llanos (Complutense University of Madrid) and the presentation entitled "'The corrido is not a painting adorning the wall. It is a name and it is a weapon': Works of the Kingdom by Yuri Herrera," while Alberto García-Aguilar (University of La Laguna) presents "Oppression surrounding the film industry of the Franco regime: crimes and corruption in 'For a Handful of Bullets' (2016), by FG Haghenbeck.".

In addition to her participation in the round table that closes the program of the first day of the seminar, Rosa Montero is one of the authors selected by the Chair for the sessions of its reading club, with the work Tears in the Rain, (Seix Barral, 2011), the novel with which Montero inaugurated her police trilogy.
