The Arrecife Youth Center in Lanzarote hosted the Third Palique of the Spaces for Change initiative, a proposal of Social Innovation Laboratory of the University of La Laguna Subsidized by the Government of the Canary Islands. This meeting addressed the “Public Governance” dimension of the Canary Islands Agenda 2030, focusing on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 16 and 17, which seek to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all, build effective and accountable institutions, and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development, respectively.
Like the previous Paliques (the first in Tenerife and the second in La Gomera), this one in Lanzarote sought to promote reflection and dialogue on building a more socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable archipelago. To this end, two dialogue tables linked to SDGs 16 and 17, made up of people of different ages, backgrounds, and social realities, were established to foster the exchange of perspectives and experiences.
The event's opening ceremony was attended by Daniel Morales García, Director General of Youth for the Canary Islands Government, and Rosmen Quevedo Cabrera, Councilor for Youth, Seniors, and Housing for the Arrecife City Council. Both celebrated the collaboration between government bodies and the "Spaces for Change" initiative, which aims to develop shared, innovative, and sustainable solutions to the main challenges facing public administrations.
It is worth highlighting the creation, by the students of CEIP Benito Méndez Tarajano, together with the artist Carla León, of a collective work inspired by the challenges and obstacles presented by public governance in the Canary Islands regarding sustainable development.
Mónica Dios Rodríguez, The director of the Social Innovation Lab at the University of La Laguna concluded the event by thanking everyone for their participation and inviting them to be agents of change and move from good intentions to real action. She emphasized the importance of adopting a proactive role in defending sustainability and social justice, stressing that, united in effort and purpose, we can move forward.
The Social Innovation Laboratory of the University of La Laguna invites both the participants of the different meetings and those who are interested in contributing to sustainability in the Canary Islands, to become protagonists of change by attending the next meetings: the fourth and last Palique of Spaces for change, which will take place in Gran Canaria, and the final Rebumbio, in Tenerife.
