Canary Islands Flora Garden

Cupressaceae

Juniperus cedrus Webb & Berthel. subsp. cedrus.

Canary cedar, Madeira cedar, sebina

The Canary Island cedar is a fast-growing subspecies endemic to the Canary Islands, reaching heights of 20 meters or more. Its leaves are arranged in whorls of three at each node, are boat-shaped (curved), evergreen, and green or grayish-green. The strobiliform flowers are located in the leaf axils. There are male and female specimens. The females produce a false fruit (not a true fruit, as they are gymnosperms) called a galbula (fleshy), which resembles a berry and turns from green to orange-red when ripe.
