The Canary Island laurel is a large tree native to the laurel forest, easily reaching 25 meters in height. Its trunk typically grows vertically, branching out as it rises, although older specimens may develop suckers growing from their roots or the base of the main trunk. The bark is grayish, more or less smooth, with whitish protuberances (lenticels). The leaves are alternate, simple, lanceolate, with slightly wavy edges and a leathery texture. They are a deep green color, paler on the underside. They are distinguished from other laurel forest leaves by the presence of glands in the axils of the secondary veins and also by their characteristic scent. The fruits are large, containing a single seed, and turn black when ripe.
