Canary Islands Flora Garden

Lamiaceae

Lavandula canariensis Mill.

Common scrubland, rocky grass

It is a highly branched shrub endemic to the Canary Islands, reaching no more than 1.5 m in height. Its young stems are quadrangular in cross-section and bear opposite, pinnatisect leaves, ranging in color from light to dark green depending on the density of the tomentum, and are aromatic. Its flowers are intensely bluish-violet, clustered in candelabra-shaped inflorescences. It germinates easily and adapts quickly to gardens, readily becoming self-seeding. With water, it can flower year-round, while without it, growth is dormant during the summer months. Several subspecies have been described in the islands.
