Canary Islands Flora Garden

Amaryllidaceae

Pancratium canariense Ker-Gawl.

Virgin's tears, Cliff lily

A large, bulbous plant with a tunicated bulb (like an onion), reaching up to 50 cm in height. It goes dormant during the summer months, disappearing completely. It sprouts again in autumn with the first rains, and depending on the year, it may even flower without leaves. The leaves are linear, obtuse, and broad, somewhat fleshy, and glaucous green. The white flowers, up to 10 cm across, are arranged in umbel-like inflorescences at the end of a flowering stem up to 1 m tall. This lily is endemic to the Canary Islands.
