Canary Island date palm, palm

The Canary Island date palm is dioecious (there are separate male and female plants) and is one of the symbols and most beautiful plants of the archipelago, having been cultivated in many parts of the world. Its straight, very thick, unbranched trunk (false trunk, as it is not woody) can reach up to 30 meters in height at maturity. Its crowns are very dense and bear a large number of dark green, pinnate leaves, the upper ones being erect but tending to droop as they mature, usually hanging down. Its white flowers produce dates that are not very fleshy but are edible, turning reddish-orange when ripe. It is endemic to the Canary Islands.
