Canary Islands Flora Garden

Anacardiaceae

Pistacia atlantica Desf.

Seedbed

The mastic tree is a large tree of the thermophilic forest that can reach over 12 meters in height. It has a very thick trunk that typically branches upwards and a rounded, dense crown formed by imparipinnate compound leaves with slightly winged petioles and ovate-lanceolate leaflets. These leaves are often parasitized by an insect that causes swellings similar to the leprosy seen on stone fruit trees. The inconspicuous flowers are clustered in racemes. The female flowers produce reddish drupes that turn blackish-brown when ripe. It is one of the few trees in the Canary Islands that still undergoes dormancy in autumn, shedding its leaves, though sometimes not all of them, in November.
