Canary Islands Flora Garden

Anacardiaceae

Pistacia lentiscus L.

Lentick

This shrub, with its rounded shape and extensive branching, is dioecious, with separate male and female plants. It is practically nonexistent in the wild in Tenerife, which is unusual, especially given its ability to resprout after being cut. Its leaves are alternate, with a glabrous petiole, a distinctly winged rachis, and a paripinnate blade with mucronate, leathery, dark green leaflets. It emits a strong, characteristic resinous odor. Its flowers are tiny, and the female flowers produce a fleshy red fruit that turns black when ripe.
