A shrub typical of the laurel forest, heavily branched, reaching up to 10 m in height. Its trunks are corky inside, sometimes hollow. Leaves are opposite, imparipinnate, with 5-7 ovate-lanceolate leaflets. The very small, white flowers are arranged in terminal, multi-flowered, umbel-like inflorescences. The fleshy fruits turn black when ripe. The seeds are usually non-viable and difficult to reproduce. The species is endemic to Macaronesia, with a subspecies endemic to the Canary Islands.
