Competencies

Competencies are the set of knowledge, skills, and attitudes to be acquired by students throughout the degree, aimed at preparing them for the exercise of professional activities.

The Degree in English Studies guarantees the development of the basic competencies included in the Spanish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education (MECES), RD1393/2007:

Competencies of the Degree in English Studies aligned with the characteristics of the qualifications located at level 2 of the MECES 

1. That students have demonstrated knowledge and understanding in an area of study that is part of the foundation of general secondary education and is usually at a level that includes some aspects that involve knowledge from the forefront of their field of study.

2. That students know how to apply their knowledge to their work in a professional manner, and possess demonstrable skills through the development and defense of arguments and problem-solving within their area of study.

3. Students should have the ability to gather and interpret relevant data, typically within their area of study, to make judgments that include reflection on relevant social, scientific, or ethical issues.

4. That students can transmit information, ideas, problems and solutions to both specialized and non-specialized audiences.

5. That students have developed the learning skills necessary to undertake further studies with a high degree of autonomy.

CG1. Mastery of the Spanish language, both spoken and written, to be able to communicate adequately.

CG2. Ability to analyze and synthesize, intrinsic to university and higher education studies.

CG3. Knowledge of study techniques and their practical application, as well as time planning and management.

CG4. Basic research skills.

CG5. Advanced level of English in oral and written situations.

CG6. Basic computer and software application skills related to humanities studies.

CG7. Ability to self-learn and manage information, both in theory and practice.

CG8. Critical and self-critical skills, and adaptation to specific situations: decision-making and problem-solving.

CE1. Effective operational command of the English language, both oral and written, equivalent to level C1+ (advanced) of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

CE2. Systematized linguistic knowledge of English phonetics, grammar, semantics, and pragmatics from both a comparative and an autonomous perspective.

CE3. Knowledge of the main degrees of formality, stylistic levels, and regional variants of the English language.

CE4. Understanding the diachronic phases and processes of the English language.

CE5. Knowledge of the theoretical foundations of linguistic analysis applied to the English language.

CE6. Ability to solve linguistic problems and perform structural analyses of the English language.

CE7. Instrumental management of direct and reverse translation methods between English and Spanish.

CE8. Ability to produce different types of texts in English.

CE9. Knowledge of literary, cultural, and ideological movements, as well as the most prominent works and authors from both the British Isles and North America, as well as other English-speaking countries.

CE10. Knowledge of the main stages and processes of the historical evolution of English-speaking countries.

CE11. Understanding the institutional organization of English-speaking countries, especially the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

CE12. Mastery of the most relevant concepts, methods, and approaches for the critical analysis of literary works and cultural movements in English-speaking countries.

CE13. Ability to perform stylistic analysis and critical interpretation of literary works and cultural texts in English.

CE14. Ability to analyze literary texts in English from a comparative perspective.

CE15. Ability to clearly and unambiguously express, both orally and in writing, one's own opinions and conclusions on the subjects being studied, both to an audience specialized in English Studies and to non-specialists.

CE16. Ability to integrate the various aspects of English Studies and to relate the knowledge specific to this degree to that of other areas and disciplines.

CE17. Ability to locate, evaluate, and utilize relevant information for English Studies from various sources and media, and use it appropriately in the training process.

CE18. Ability to analyze and synthesize complex documentation in English.

CE19. Ability to identify problems and topics for research or expanding knowledge in the subjects of the degree.

CE20. Ability to participate critically in debates in English and to formulate critical questions regarding others' presentations.

CE21. Ability to perform linguistic advice and text correction tasks expressed in English.

CE22. Ability to apply the knowledge and skills of the degree to professional areas related to English Studies.
