ADMISSION PROFILE

Any student who meets the access requirements established by current regulations may be admitted to the pre-registration process for the Degree in Nautical Science and Maritime Transport. However, it is recommended that students have taken the Scientific-Technical option of the Baccalaureate, as well as having taken subjects in: mathematics, physics, chemistry, English and graphic expression.

In general terms, the ideal entry profile is defined as students who have the following characteristics:

  • Interest in science and techniques applied to the maritime world.
  • Ability to analyze and logically reason.
  • Rigor and method in work.
  • Merchant Marine Vocation.
  • Knowledge of English at the level of the University Entrance Exams

GRADUATE PROFILE

The professional skills and responsibilities for which the title qualifies allow professional practice not only on board ships, but also cover any other activity carried out in the maritime sector directly related to the navigation of ships as well as in companies dedicated to the trade that these generate.

The Degree in Nautical Science and Maritime Transport integrates a series of specific knowledge at a higher level in the field of maritime technologies that, depending on their applications, can be classified into four sections:

  • Those relating to the positioning and navigation of the vessel, as well as the procedures involved in loading and unloading operations.
  • Those relating to route planning, protection of the marine environment, safety and protection of persons on board.
  • Those related to the management and organization of maintenance, human resources and operation of the vessel.
  • Those involved in repair, inspection and construction projects for all types of vessels and offshore platforms.

ACCESS TO THE PROFESSIONAL TITLE OF SECOND CLASS MERCHANT MARINE PILOT

Students are informed that in order to obtain the professional title of Second Class Merchant Navy Pilot, they must meet the following requirements external to the University:

  • Assessment of the minimum physical abilities required: maintaining balance; going up and down stairs; manual and finger skills and endurance; lifting, dragging and carrying a load; squatting, kneeling and bending over; distinguishing a certain object or shape at a distance; hearing a sound of certain decibels at a certain frequency; etc.
  • Having passed the medical examination for maritime embarkation carried out by the Social Institute of the Navy. Graduates of this qualification must meet this requirement independently of their university studies.
  • Approval of professional specialty certificates before the DGMM
  • Processing of the Maritime Registration Book issued by the corresponding Maritime Captaincy.
  • Having completed a period of embarkation of no less than 12 months. Students who study the Degree in Nautical Science and Maritime Transport from the University of La Laguna may have the professional internships carried out during their studies recognised by the DGMM.
  • Pass the professional suitability test determined by the Ministry of Public Works.
