Competencies

Competencies are the set of knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by students throughout the degree, aimed at preparing them for the exercise of professional activities.

The proposed Official Title of Degree in Nautical Science and Maritime Transport, has as its main objective to provide the basic knowledge and techniques, as well as the capacities and skills that a teacher must have at his disposal. Merchant Navy 2nd Class Pilot to develop their professional activity.

The fourth transitional provision of RD 1393/2007 establishes that the current general guidelines for the corresponding degrees, both academic (Diploma in Maritime Navigation) and professional (Merchant Navy Pilot), will apply to university degrees linked to regulated professional activities.

BASIC COMPETENCES
1 Acquisition, understanding and application of knowledge in a subject area that builds on the foundation of general secondary education and is usually at a level that, while supported by advanced textbooks, also includes some aspects that involve knowledge from the cutting edge of its field of study.

3 Ability to gather and interpret relevant data (normally within their area of study) to make judgments that include a reflection on relevant issues of a social, scientific, technical or ethical nature.

5 Development of those learning skills necessary to undertake further studies with a high degree of autonomy.

SPECIFIC COMPETENCES
1 Application of navigation techniques to determine position, course, time, speed and distance.
2 Knowledge of the calculation of different types of tides using the various existing methods.
3 Application of different techniques for climatological and synoptic navigation.
4 Application of loading, transport, preservation and handling techniques for all types of goods, taking into account optimization and safety in merchant vessels.
5 Anchoring, towing and mooring of vessels. Maneuvering in restricted waters
6 Radiocommunication systems. Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS).
7 Application of different techniques for the prevention of marine pollution. Compliance with international regulations.
8 Operation of firefighting, survival and abandon ship systems.
9 Operation of food preservation systems in maritime transport.
10 Knowledge of ship development, application, inspection, optimization and construction.
11 Operation of ventilation, cooling and combustion air conditioning systems.
STCW CODE COMPETENCES
1 Ability to serve as an officer on civil vessels without any type of limitation, once the requirements demanded by the Maritime Administration have been met.
2 Ability to exercise command on civil vessels of up to 5,000 GT, once the requirements demanded by the Maritime Administration have been met
3 Determining the position of the ship by different navigation methods
4 Ability to plan and control the meteo-oceanographic route
5 Conduct a safe navigation watch
6 Correct use of different radio navigation devices
7 Respond correctly to different emergency situations
8 Responding appropriately to a distress signal at sea
9 Correct use of IMO standard maritime English vocabulary
10 Perform the different ship maneuvers accurately in rescue, docking or anchoring situations
11 Load, handle and stow the different transportable goods on a ship in the appropriate manner
12 Maintaining good vessel stability
13 Ability to maintain the safety and security of people on board
14 Ability to protect the marine environment and apply environmental sustainability criteria to maritime transport
