FFI2017-82850-R. Galen and his medical, philosophical, scientific and literary works (GYSOMFCYL)

  1. The group comprises researchers from various Spanish cities, so it is advisable to meet two or three times during the three-year period to share our experiences, exchange viewpoints, and enrich each other through discussions. The aim will be to publish the key ideas from these meetings.
  2. It is essential to have access to the basic and general bibliography on Galen's works. This should begin with the information available on the website of the CMG of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy and the Bibliography of Galen and Pseudo-Galen compiled by G. Fichtner and updated by R. Wittwer, as well as the supplementary bibliography on Galen published in Spain in recent years (Tempus). Also essential is the Galen collection published by the French publisher Les Belles Lettres, with an annotated edition of the text, translation, and commentaries, as well as the works of Galen occasionally published in Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Great Britain.
  3. Some of the doctors involved in this project have experience in having already published translations of Galen, of which 15 volumes with 27 translated treatises have appeared in Classical Editions.
  4. It is essential for the Project to continue providing new Spanish translations of Galen's works, not yet translated, with special attention to the Greek text, and to accompany them with introductory prologues to the author and the work, clarifying any possible doubts about the text, with extensive and abundant notes of a philological, historical, philosophical, doctrinal, semantic, cultural, and medical nature, if applicable, etc. The vocabularies (Greek and Spanish) included at the end of the translations are important for consultation and comparison with other works.
