Conservation and valuation of paleontological resources of the Canary Islands: Paleopark of the Anaga Massif (PALEOPARQUE ANAGA)

This project involves defining a Paleopark encompassing the paleontological sites located in the Anaga Massif, in northern Tenerife (Canary Islands). This area comprises a unique fossil record preserved within the geological context of active volcanic islands, consisting of Quaternary marine and terrestrial deposits. The project will employ standard heritage assessment methodology, including the study of scientific, sociocultural, and socioeconomic evidence, as well as the risk of deterioration, combined with the use of new 3D technologies. The resulting digital materials will be presented and evaluated in educational settings. The findings will contribute to preserving valuable paleobiological information useful for biodiversity conservation and to enhancing scientific literacy, thus ensuring the well-being of the Canary Islands community. This project aligns with the activities outlined in the declaration of the Anaga Biosphere Reserve, and its implementation contributes to the sustainable development of this area and, by extension, the island of Tenerife.
