Coastal Flooding Adaptation to Climate Change through Flexible Strategies in Macaronesia Urban Areas

The project Coastal Flooding Adaptation to Climate Change through Flexible Strategies in Macaronesia Urban Areas, commonly called LIFE Garachico (LIFE 20 CCA/ES/001641), is coordinated by the Vice-Ministry of Fight Against Climate Change and Ecological Transition of the Government of the Canary Islands.

The University of La Laguna (ULL) has been a partner in the project since its inception on September 21, 2021, forming part of a multidisciplinary team of researchers and technical staff from both public and private entities in Spain and Portugal. The project aims to develop a flexible strategic adaptation framework that can be applied to various coastal municipalities in Macaronesia, in order to increase the resilience of these areas to current and future extreme coastal events caused by climate change.

Among its objectives are the standardization of procedures for coastal flood risk analysis; providing tools to determine acceptable risk levels for communities; and implementing local adaptation measures and early warning systems, among others. This innovative project is distinguished by the prominent role of the local population in the coastal areas where it is being implemented. The municipality of Garachico has been chosen as a pilot area from which to export various tools and experiences. The project has a budget of €2,632,132.00 and is funded under a 55% grant by the EU's LIFE program.
