Research on the Earth system, including the history and evolution of the biosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere, their interactions, as well as their current state and possible future evolution. This is a highly interdisciplinary field, integrating various basic disciplines to study the complex problems, both fundamental and applied, that the Earth presents at different spatial and temporal scales. It encompasses climatology, soil science, stratigraphy, geodesy, geophysics, structural geology, geomorphology, geochemistry, hydrology, meteorology, mineralogy, oceanography, paleontology, petrography, petrology, sedimentology, seismology, tectonics, and volcanology.
