Promotion and Creation of Knowledge-Based Companies and Spin-offs


The OTC-ULL It is the body responsible for managing the Industrial and Intellectual Property of the University of La Laguna. The proper protection of inventions is a key element in enabling the transfer of research results to different socioeconomic sectors, promoting technological innovation and generating social and economic impact and benefits.

The University of La Laguna promotes entrepreneurship as a way to transform knowledge into social progress, employment, and economic development. Fostering an entrepreneurial culture within the university community allows research results to become real solutions for society.

University spin-offs are companies created by members of the ULL community that base their activity on knowledge generated within the University itself, developing new products, processes or services of high added value.

From the Area of Knowledge-Based Business CreationThe Knowledge Transfer Office (OTC) accompanies and supports the creation of spin-offs, start-ups and other science or technology-based entrepreneurial initiatives, offering guidance, advice and follow-up throughout the entire process.

These initiatives create opportunities for research staff, strengthen research groups, revitalize strategic areas of the University, and contribute to the creation of skilled jobs and wealth in the surrounding area. This activity is carried out in collaboration with the General Foundation of the University of La Laguna (FGULL).

The main services it provides to the research community are:

Information, guidance and definition of business initiatives

Information and advisory service for research staff and other members of the university community regarding the possibilities of creating a spin-off or start-up based on research results or knowledge generated at the University of La Laguna. Specifically,

  • Information on the applicable institutional framework, the ULL transfer strategy and the general phases of the process.
  • Initial assessment of the initiative and its fit within the ULL's transfer strategy.
  • Identification of transferable knowledge or results.
  • Determining the most suitable type of company (spin-off or start-up).
  • Initial guidance on the structure of the promoting team and the general approach of the business project.

Support in the constitution

Monitoring during the different phases of the incorporation process, which may include:

  • Pre-evaluation and institutional validation of the initiative.
  • Definition of the necessary agreements between the company and the University.
  • Support in preparing the documentation required for incorporation.
  • Coordination with the agents involved for the correct formalization of the company.

Regulation and institutional fit

Support and guidance on the regulatory and institutional fit aspects necessary for the creation of EBCs and spin-offs, such as:

  • Conditions of the company's affiliation with the University of La Laguna.
  • Use and exploitation of knowledge generated at ULL.
  • Compliance with applicable university regulations.
  • General guidance on compatibility and participation of teaching and research staff, where applicable.

Monitoring and support in the initial stages after its establishment

Institutional monitoring and support during the initial stages after incorporation, with the aim of promoting the consolidation of the company and its alignment with the transfer and entrepreneurship policies of the University of La Laguna.

Training in entrepreneurship and business creation

Design, organization and dissemination of specific training actions aimed at the creation and consolidation of EBC or spin-off and start up, aimed at research and entrepreneurial staff.
The training may cover, among other things, aspects related to scientific entrepreneurship, business models, knowledge valuation, market transfer and institutional framework.
