Macaronesian platform for increasing excellence in R&D in water desalination and in knowledge of the desalinated water-energy nexus (DESAL+)

Despite having a remarkable desalination plant network, unique in the world for its variety and size, the Cooperation Area lacks a cohesive group of researchers to address the sector's needs. It is essential to invest in R&D&I in desalination (for drinking water supply and agricultural use), delve deeper into the water-energy nexus, and allocate resources in a coordinated manner to develop innovative solutions and demonstration projects related to water desalination technologies and the applied use of renewable energies, in line with the priorities of the RIS3 and EU Blue Growth initiatives. DESAL+ proposes:

1. Create a joint research platform in the Cooperation Space.
2. Modernize, streamline, strengthen and make visible the desalination infrastructure associated with R&D&I.
3. Develop innovative solutions and demonstration projects.
4. Increase the training of researchers and joint participation in European projects as well as international cooperation.
