This project aims to create an observatory that will generate quantitative and qualitative data on the impact of microplastics and other pollutants on the beaches of the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Madeira, and the Azores. To achieve this, a monitoring program will be developed to track microplastics and other pollutants in the sand and water of the beaches of the four archipelagos, revealing the current level of contamination and its evolution. Studies will also be conducted on the incidence of microplastics in certain fish species and their effects on food chains and ecosystems. The project also seeks to improve public understanding of plastic pollution, including raising awareness among the population, by carrying out significant outreach, training, and environmental education activities focused on the marine environments of the four archipelagos.
