Promoting whale watching ecotourism as a model for sustainable economic development through the protection and conservation of cetacean populations and their enhancement as a natural heritage of Macaronesia (MARCET II)

Through the already established MARCET Network (MAC/1.1b/149), its subsequent harmonization of protocols aimed at the conservation of cetacean populations in Macaronesia, and the analyses carried out on the current situation of the tourism sector associated with these species, this new initiative (MARCET Project II) was born with the objective of generating management tools at the local and regional level for the protection of cetacean groups residing in marine protected areas and areas of special interest for the activity, the conservation of the good environmental status of these areas, and the development of ecological and environmental sustainability criteria applicable to the ecotourism activity of whale watching, thus leading to its strengthening and enhancement as a model of economic development
sustainable in the region.
