Study and conservation of archaeological assets in the context of the Guanche mill workshop-quarries in Las Cañadas del Teide. A proposal for environmental and heritage sustainability (ECASAP)

The circular Guanche hand mills for making gofio (a type of flour) are among the most iconic archaeological artifacts of the Canary Islands. Found in the archaeological records of all the islands, they continued to be manufactured and used well into the 20th century, becoming a common household item in many rural Canarian homes. The circular Guanche rotary mill, made of porous or vacuolar volcanic rock, appears in all archaeological contexts on Tenerife. Despite their presence and abundance, as evidenced in collections and museums, they lack in-depth study. This project aims to study these hand mills by analyzing the intact mill workshops and quarries discovered by the research team in Las Cañadas del Teide (Cruz de Tea-Lomo de Chío-Chircheros, Volcán Escondido). To this end, the use of new methodological procedures is proposed for the study of these unique archaeological sites in order to investigate and conserve the evidence detected in situ and integrate it into its original volcanic context for appropriate conservation, musealization, and enhancement and use as heritage. The aim is to study the technical processes of extraction, manufacture, distribution, use, and significance of Guanche hand mills, as well as all the social behaviors related to their production in the high mountains of Tenerife. The study also includes experimental archaeology and ethnographic documentation. The project will be developed within the territorial framework of Las Cañadas del Teide, Teide National Park, and therefore in a protected natural area, specifically in zones designated as restricted-use areas with stringent conservation requirements. It proposes innovative methodological strategies and addresses multidisciplinary studies that affect the landscape, environmental sustainability, heritage restoration, and the intervention and study of archaeological assets. This research will establish guidelines for in situ research of deposits with similar characteristics in other natural areas, generating a model that can serve as a reference to be applied to other islands of the Archipelago and also to other geographical contexts of volcanic origin.
