Humanism and science in contemporary culture

When addressing the relationship between contemporary science and the humanist tradition, the first thing we notice is its inherent complexity and problematic nature. However, despite these defining characteristics, we also immediately understand that this connection is one whose ultimate nature is largely unknown, yet one upon which we are necessarily compelled to reflect. We know that, whether we like it or not, we must address it, because, given the tragedies that plague our present, it is easy to accept that the very survival of our culture, and therefore of those who build and live within it, is at stake every day through the aforementioned relationship between the most cherished values that our humanist tradition has contributed and the onslaughts to which the relentless advance of science and technology continually subjects reality.
