This illuminated manuscript was, in fact, a book dedicated to women's health. It was written by Aldobrandino (Aldebrandin of Siena) for Countess Beatrice of Savoy—wife of Raymond Berengar V, the last Count of Provence and mother-in-law of King Louis IX of France—for whom he was the personal physician. The book was full of practical advice, such as the importance of travel for health, tips for pregnancy, newborn care, choosing a wet nurse, and even beauty advice. The book dedicated to the Countess was written in 1256, and today about thirty manuscript copies survive.
