Health risks for pregnant women and their offspring in the 21st century

Inaugural Lecture of the Academic Year 2026-2027, delivered by Dr. Nieves Luisa González González, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

In this lesson, we will examine the synergistic effect of climate change, obesity, and the ubiquitous environmental toxins on the health of pregnant women and their children. We will address the role of endocrine disruption as a mechanism of action of harmful chemicals, with particular consideration of the microplastics that contain and release them, and of epigenetic changes as mediators of transgenerational effects. Building on Barker's hypothesis of the intrauterine origin of adult diseases, we will examine the relationship between maternal exposure to these factors and the risk of offspring developing obesity, diabetes, and neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder. Finally, we will review the recommendations of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics for reducing pregnant women's exposure to chemical pollutants.
