Marine Biology: Biodiversity and Conservation

Sciences

The University Master in Marine Biology: Biodiversity and Conservation given by the University of La Laguna brings together the long experience of over forty years of teaching and research in this field in ULL. It will place the emphasis on practical and applied training. Students will acquire a sound preparation in marine biodiversity, particularly in the Atlantic-Mediterranean region, and will also gain a command of the know-how tools in the field of planning, managing and conservation, research and teaching relating to the environment, biodiversity and marine resources

General information

  • Credits: 90 ECTS
  • Duration: 1.5 years
  • Methodology: Classroom-based
  • Place:
    • Faculty of Sciences. Biology Section
  • Academic direction:
  • Provide students who are going to do a PhD thesis with the skills required by a research professional, as the master contemplates subjects aimed towards the newer, more specific and current aspects of marine biology as a multi-disciplinary science
  • Acquire skills to apply and integrate broad, multi-disciplinary scientific knowledge of marine biodiversity, conservation and management of the marine environment, ecosystem and resources
  • To provide students, through practical and applied training, a formation that will enable them to start researching into the nature, structure, function and conservation of marine biodiversity and ecosystems, equipping them with the tools they need to facilitate the task of finding a job
  • Expert in the knowledge of marine biodiversity and how to harness, plan, manage and conserve it
    General skills
    • Know and acquire skill in using the main sources of information and documentation, including handling data bases and internet

    Specific skills
    • Identify, classify and categorise living marine organisms and the populations and communities that comprise them
    • Take samples, an inventory and analyse populations and communities, and design experiments relating to biodiversity and its conservation
    • Select and apply the best instrumental and analysis techniques for addressing a study of the marine environment, its biodiversity and conservation
    • Implement and guide studies and practical work on marine biodiversity and its conservation
    • Estimate and quantify population and inter-specific diversity
    • Conduct environmental impact studies on marine biodiversity
    • Analyse geological, physical and chemical processes of the marine environment for the purposes of conserving its biodiversity
    • Assess the state of conservation of marine biota and identify and monitor the causes that affect its conservation
    • Appraise the vulnerability of marine biota
    • Categorise, monitor endangered marine species and assess their populations
    • Recognise invasive marine species, know how to drive control and eradication strategies and provide solutions to the environmental problems that give rise to them
    • Build capacities to propose actions to deal with conservation problems
    • Elaborate and implement research projects in the area of marine biodiversity and its conservation, including ecological restoration projects and marine species recovery plans
    • Assess and manage natural marine areas and design marine reserves, bearing in mind the principles of island bio-geography
    • Combine thematic maps and generate new information on handling, conservation and management of marine species, communities and ecosystems
    • Apply the legislative aspects that affect marine biota and its conservation
    • Assess and drive the sustainable use of marine ecosystems and a rational exploitation of renewable natural resources
    • Organise and manage parks and museums relating to marine biodiversity and its conservation
    • Drive innovations in the field of environmental education relating to marine biodiversity and its conservation
    • Interpret the physiological processes of marine organisms and develop innovations in the field of sustainable aquiculture

This Master is aimed at students who are interested in specialising in Marine Biology and biodiversity conservation with a view to acquiring the knowledge and skills that will also enable them to find a job, and also train them to explore the fundamental research, development and innovation techniques in Biodiversity in greater depth. The Master is aimed preferably at graduates in biology, but other graduates are eligible (RD 1393/2007, Art. 16), preferably students who have studied subjects that cover areas relating to biology, such as graduates in Marine Sciences and Environmental Sciences
  • The compulsory or recommended prerequisites for the different subjects of the Master, contained in the teaching guide, indicate the prior knowledge necessary and may act as a reference for students
