Tropical diseases affect almost one billion people throughout the world, particularly in low-income countries and tropical and sub-tropical climates. According to the WHO, tropical diseases are one of the leading causes of death in the world, and Africa is the worst-affected continent. The University Master in Tropical Disease Research and Diagnosis (MIDETROP, in Spanish) will enable students to acquire knowledge, abilities and skills that will improve the approach to tropical diseases, it will help to improve public health in developing countries and these students will be able to engage in research in a broad field of health

  • Provide the capacity to design and implement programmes related to the promotion, education, management, information and research into tropical diseases
  • They will have to be able to carry out, design and interpret the different tests necessary to resolve the situations that arise in the diagnosis and research into tropical diseases
  • Students are expected to acquire the knowledge, attitudes and abilities necessary to prevent, diagnose, research and control what are known as “Tropical Diseases”
  • Graduates of this master in tropical disease diagnosis and research (MIDETROP) will acquire the knowledge, attitudes and abilities necessary to act in the prevention, diagnosis, research and control of tropical diseases. They will be able to carry out, design and interpret the different tests necessary to resolve the situations that arise in the diagnosis and research of tropical diseases and to design and implement programmes related to the promotion, education, management, information and research of tropical diseases. Furthermore, completing this master will provide the foundations necessary for entering doctoral studies and to continue a research career in these fields in any national or international centre

    • Know and apply useful tools for diagnosing tropical diseases adapted to the health conditions of each country
    • Draw up tropical disease diagnosis protocols adapted to the health conditions of each country
    • Apply the epidemiological research methodologies applicable to health problems
    • Know the main infectious agents that cause tropical diseases, their clinical signs, diagnosis and treatment
    • Know the peculiarities of the clinical signs, diagnosis and treatment of infectious and parasitic pathologies among children
    • Know the main dermatological and sexually transmitted diseases to be found in tropical countries, along with their clinical signs, procedures of diagnosis and treatment
    • Intervene in the activities of promoting health, prevention and diagnosis of tropical diseases, in individuals, families and communities, with an integral, multi-professional vision of the health-disease process
    • Know the ecological factors that have an impact in the world-wide distribution and the emergence of infectious tropical diseases
    • Participate in developing therapy protocols for tropical diseases
    • Apply knowledge to resolve health problems in a tropical environment
    • Analyse health problems in poverty-stricken social and political environments
    • Transmit health problems to society and their relations with poverty, their causes and possible solutions
    • Develop health-hygiene protocols related to the transmission of the agents that cause tropical diseases
    • Know the prospects of future treatments applicable to tropical diseases
