The Master’s Degree in Video Game Development at the University of La Laguna presents specialized and eminently practical studies, which allow students with degrees in computer science and information technology to specialise in methodologies and technologies video game development. The title is taught in semi-presential form.

  • The Master’s Degree in Video Game Development is a professionalising Master . It has been designed with the aim of offering value to the growing national video game industry, helping to cover its training needs and qualified personnel specialized in video games development; in line with the progress made in recent years by industry associations and public bodies, both national and regional.

    General
    • To understand the different problems, approaches, technical literature and research lines developed in the field of disciplines related to the design and development of video games.
    • Ability to analyse problems within the area of video game design and development, as well as to identify appropriate techniques for their resolution.
    • To know in depth the symbolic values and the semiosis processes that operate in thematerial culture (landscapes, environments and in teriors, products and visual releases) to be able to detect them, respect them and incorporate them when designing innovative solutions and proposals for tourism products and services.
    • Students must have a thorough understanding of the symbolic values and semiotic processes that operate in material culture (landscapes, environments and interiors, products and visual communications) so that they can detect them, respect them, and incorporate them into design solutions and innovative proposals for tourism products and services.
    • Understand the process of creating a video game, knowing the role of the different agents and actors involved, both from the perspective of the concrete operation of a multidisciplinary team and from a global vision of the video game industry.
    • Ability to address the planning and management of video game creation projects,enhancing research and innovation in the field of video game design and development.
    • Ability to create, organize and maintain professional portfolio complementary to the curriculum in the field of the video game industry.

    Specific
    • Ability to orient the production of a video game using the player-centred design as a framework
    • Ability to participate in the design of video games, considering aspects such as: stages of design, elaboration of design documents, playability, design of levels and use and design of game mechanics. Ability to participate in and direct the production of a video game, throughout its life cycle, and work in a video game studio.
    • Ability to understand and know how to explain the components of a video game and the differences between the different development platforms.
    • Ability to develop video games, selecting and using the most appropriate development tools.
    • Ability to design and develop artificial intelligences, both cooperative and adversarial, suitable for video games.
    • Ability to know and understand how the graphical pipeline works and how the graphics and multimedia application development API and libraries for graphic and multimedia application development are used.
    • Ability to know and understand how video game engines work.
    • Ability to understand the basic principles of multimedia technologies and manage content in the context of video games.
    • Ability to develop video games and virtual and augmented reality applications, selecting and using the most appropriate development tools.
    • Ability to develop video games for the web, mobile devices, consoles and other devices taking into account the specificities and limitations of each platform.
    • Ability to develop multiplayer and networked video games.
    • Ability to participate, plan and direct the analysis and quality assurance tasks of a video game.
    • To have and understand knowledge about current trends, latest developments and lines of research in the video game industry.
    • Ability to develop user interfaces for video games; using visual, auditory and haptic indications.

  • The recommended admission profile is that of graduates of the Degree in Computer Engineering or other related degrees in the field of information technology such as graduates in: Telecommunication, Multimedia, Software Engineering; Computer Engineering or Information Technology; with programming knowledge, without prior experience in the development of video games. Likewise, It will be possible to access with other degrees if professional experience in the field of software development is demonstrated.
  • Applicants in different situations will be evaluated by the Academic Commission of the Master based on the subjects studied, professional experience and training in the field of information technology and evidence of skills and proficiency. In those cases where the previous knowledge acquired by the candidates does not cover the necessary competences, the Master’s Academic Committee will specify the additional training to be completed.
