  • To understand the strategies and procedures that must be used to provide comfort to the patient, attend symptoms, and communicate with the patient and their family when providing palliative care aimed at alleviating the suffering of advanced illnesses or terminal illness.
  • To perform nursing care based on comprehensive healthcare services, which involves collaboration between professionals of all backgrounds, the use of established procedures and ongoing care.
  • To understand healthcare information systems.
  • To work as part of a professional team that may be either unidisciplinary, multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary in nature, and also staff from supporting services.
  • To establish the means through which testing should be performed, taking into account scientific and technical practicalities and quality control measures.
  • To be familiar with the primary sources of funding for healthcare and social services, and use available resources effectively.
  • To know the professional code of ethics and standards for Nursing in Spain, and understand the ethical implications of healthcare in an ever-changing global context.
  • To establish effective communication with patients, families, social groups, and friends in order to generate health awareness.
  • To protect the health and well-being of the individuals, families or groups receiving treatment, thus ensuring their safety.
  • To promote healthy lifestyle habits, self-care, and provide ongoing support via preventative healthcare services and therapies.
  • To promote and respect the right of the patient to: receive information; provide informed consent for treatment; participate in decisions relating to their own treatment; act autonomously and make decisions about how to proceed in matters relating to their healthcare or illness.
  • To understand that people are independant and autonomous individuals who have their own individual physical & psychological needs and set of social circumstances that must be respected without bias. Their opinions, beliefs and values must be respected, and their right to privacy proctected by following professional confidentiality.
  • To ensure nursing practices are based on scientific findings and techniques.
  • To design care systems for individuals, families or groups, evaluate their impact, and modify as necessary.
  • To understand human interactions based on gender, social group affiliation, or communities within social and multicultural contexts.
  • To understand and apply basic nursing theory and techniques.
  • To plan and deliver nursing care for individuals, families or goups based on established healthcare objectives, and evaluate the impact of said care using clinical practice and assistance guidebooks that detail the processes through which a healthcare problem is diagnosed and treated.
  • To be able to offer professional medical treatment in the field of nursing, which, using the most up-to-date medical practices that best fit the healthcare needs of individual patients. This care will meet safety standards and quality control standards set forth in applicable legislation and professional standards.

No specific prior training courses are required in order to access this degree in Nursing. Although that said, we recommend students hold a baccalaureate in science and technology (see Royal Decree 1467/2007, posted in the State Gazette of 6 November).
