Description
It is a martial art created from a combination of several traditional Japanese martial arts, with a profound spiritual teaching. The word aikido means "the way to achieve harmony through energy" ("ai" "harmony", "ki" "universe" and do "way or path").
A regular Aikido class begins with a mutual greeting between teacher and students, continues with meditation (mokuso) to calm the mind and leave behind the stress of the day, then moves on to the practice of specific techniques, characterized by a solid foundation with fluid and relaxed movements, coordinated with proper breathing, as well as the work of rolling falls (ukemi), and ends with the greeting.
The mind-body connection is achieved through breathing and concentration of the "hara." This process of accumulating and distributing energy can be directed and focused by the person's will on any part of the body.
