Description
Canarian wrestling is a traditional sport of the Canary Islands, predating the Castilian conquest. It was practiced by the aboriginal population and has been passed down through generations to the present day. It has been transmitted as a traditional game or sport, experiencing periods of popularity followed by periods of decline, during which it was even banned.
Canarian wrestling is a traditional, competitive sport in which the aim is to make the opponent touch the ground with any part of the body except the soles of the feet, combining skill (technique), strength, and balance. When this happens, the opponent is considered to have been "taken down," winning the "hold.".
Canarian wrestling is distinguished by the Canarian cultural identity it represents and its spirit of respect, nobility, and camaraderie. Before and after each bout, the wrestlers greet each other with a handshake, and at the end, the winner helps the defeated wrestler to their feet.
