Development of advanced technological alternatives for the demineralization of groundwater in volcanic terrain.
Sustainable water resource management is vital in island environments, especially on islands with water stress or limited resources. In the specific case of the Canary Islands, water availability varies considerably between islands due to the archipelago's unique geographical and climatic characteristics. In the central and western islands, groundwater is the primary resource. In these areas, certain aquifers contain high concentrations of dissolved salts due to the volcanic nature of the terrain. This problem is particularly relevant in the northwest of Tenerife, where issues with the quality of water used for urban and agricultural purposes have historically been observed. Improving the quality of this water to facilitate its use for human consumption or agricultural irrigation would help meet demand and significantly boost the economic development of Tenerife. The overall objective of the research project is to evaluate the scientific, technological and economic feasibility of treating groundwater with high concentrations of salts, especially fluoride, using technology trains that incorporate nanofiltration systems and appropriate pretreatments.
