Evaluation of non-invasive brain stimulation protocols for the rehabilitation of patients with aphasia and development of a Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation Service in Tenerife (SECNIT)
Evaluation of non-invasive brain stimulation protocols for the rehabilitation of patients with aphasia and development of a Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation Service in Tenerife (SECNIT)
Acute cerebrovascular disease is the second leading cause of death in Spain, and its sequelae can lead to speech disorders. In the Canary Islands, it is estimated that 7,000 people suffer from aphasia resulting from a stroke. This project focuses on developing a neurorehabilitation treatment (TOT) for non-fluent perisylvian aphasia using two non-invasive brain stimulation techniques (tDCS and TMS). Our main objectives are: a) to empirically validate which non-invasive brain stimulation treatment (tDCS or TMS) demonstrates higher and longer-lasting recovery rates in patients with aphasia; and b) to establish a non-invasive brain stimulation service for aphasic patients and design treatment protocols for other neurological disorders. In this way, we will be able to establish a spin-off specializing in functional neurorehabilitation through non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) in various neurological disorders, facilitating a transfer of neuroscientific knowledge acquired at the University Institute of Neuroscience of the ULL to the improvement of the quality of life of the population of Tenerife.
