With this work, the academic center enters, "the select club of the five Canary Island libraries that possess manuscript collections: Royal Society of Friends of the Country, Canary Museum, La Cosmológica Society (La Palma) and Municipal Library of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.".
The volume is notable for the heterogeneity of the materials collected, which include sermons, private correspondence, manuals, works of art, and more. In other words, it contains both well-known and frequently used manuscripts, as well as previously unpublished ones.
The University Library has in its Reserve Collection 21 incunabula, 13,000 volumes of printed works prior to 1801 and 171 manuscripts.
Its foundation dates back to the last years of the 18th century, with the donation of a batch of books by the bishop of Tavira and Almazán.
The collection grew thanks to successive purchases and donations, but it was in the 19th century that the ULL Library acquired the most important part of its historical holdings.
