Greek texts on equality. Quintus of Smyrna

Teaching resources for the classroom

This classroom workbook is intended to encourage reasoned student debate on equality and other gender issues through the translation and study of a selection of Greek texts relating to Penthesilea, queen of the Amazons, and her participation in the Trojan War, as narrated in Quintus Smyrnaeus's Posthomerica. Penthesilea is the central character of this book, and, both as an Amazon and as a woman, her figure elicits different reactions regarding her role in the conflict.

Each text begins with a brief introduction, followed by suggested activities: grammatical, cultural, and sociolinguistic exercises, supplementary readings, and explanatory notes if necessary. Finally, we offer our proposed translation, with the practical aim of providing immediate feedback to help reinforce the texts studied in class.
