Augmentative communication

A conceptual and practical introduction

The concept of "augmentative communication", or "alternative and augmentative communication systems (AAC)", refers to all those techniques that allow contact to be established with people who for some reason have lost or had their ability to speak spoken language altered, or who even have little chance of acquiring or developing it.

This problem is quite common in the work of speech therapists, who must address the problems of people with cerebral palsy or who have undergone surgery, show cognitive delay, or suffer from autism spectrum disorders, aphasia, or some other circumstance that prevents them from using oral communication, whether temporarily or permanently.

The book takes an introductory and general approach, aiming to train students or professionals encountering this subject for the first time. The volume comprises approximately 200 pages and is divided into eight chapters: augmentative and alternative communication systems; the pictographic communication system; the Bliss system; other systems; assistive technologies for AAC; evaluation in the implementation of AAC; teaching and users of AAC; and a description of some computer applications for AAC.
