Training activities

Training in social research techniques

  • Number of hours: 30
  • Description: Courses on advances in social research in the two lines of research of the Doctoral Program, aimed at enhancing the skills that guarantee the incorporation of specific and transversal aspects of research.
  • The content is geared towards:
    • Research design, the setting of objectives, the design of hypotheses, and the forms of operationalization
    • Research structure, taking into account the disciplinary profile of thesis projects and implementation of workshops on techniques such as fieldwork, surveys, content analysis, discussion and focus groups, and expert panels
    • Use of specific statistical programs
  • Time planning: unique, at the beginning of the first year of the doctorate for full-time students, and choosing between the 1st and 2nd year for part-time students.
  • Justification: Enhancement of basic skills CB11, CB12, CB13 and CB16
  • Learning outcomes: Acquisition of basic knowledge to develop research designs and training in the use of quantitative and qualitative data analysis tools.
  • Language: Spanish and English
  • Status: Mandatory
  • Control procedures: monitoring attendance, participation and submission of the activities proposed in the course and/or in the courses proposed in each academic year
  • Mobility: No mandatory mobility activities are planned, although they could be carried out subject to approval by the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program.

Workshop on Information Retrieval, Scientific Writing and Communication

  • Number of hours: 20
  • Description: The activity is designed to acquire a solid understanding of skills for managing the processes of searching, organizing, evaluating, and using academic information and sources.
  • Content: will be that established by the Library and Documentation Service of the ULL, the Vice-Rectorate for Teaching and the Doctoral School, which propose monographic sessions and constitute the support for its development
  • Time planning: unique, at the beginning of the second year of the doctorate for full-time students and the 3rd year for part-time students.
  • Justification: development of basic skills CB11, CB13, CB14 and CB15. CA02, CA04 and CA06
  • Learning outcomes: Acquisition of basic knowledge to develop research designs and to be trained in the use of quantitative/qualitative data analysis tools

  • Status: Mandatory
  • Control procedures: the pass/fail rating will be given through the continuous evaluation system with controlled attendance, active participation and resolution of the proposed cases
  • Mobility: No mobility actions are planned.

Model of Scientific Communication

  • Number of hours: 12 hours
  • Description: Activity of presenting scientific communication (Research Plan and/or communications), in small meetings or seminars organized so that the student acquires the necessary knowledge about the best ways to communicate and disseminate science.
  • Justification: Enhancement of basic skills CB12 and CB16, and capabilities CA03
  • Content:
    • The components of oral discourse and communication models.
    • Organization, synthesis, guidelines and strategies.
    • Exercises to prepare a research presentation.
    • Mini-presentations by doctoral students
  • Time planning: Annual nature and recommendation from the first year for students with full-time and part-time dedication.
  • Learning outcomes. Knowledge of the research lines developed in the work environment; establishing references with leading research groups at the national and international levels; reviewing the current state of the seminar topics; and stimulating critical thinking.
  • Status: Mandatory
  • Control procedure: Attendance control by signature. Presentation and discussion of the most relevant aspects of the content developed and/or the seminars attended in the Doctoral Program.

Seminars, workshops and conferences of the Program

  • Number of hours: 20 hours
  • Description: Seminars and Workshops taught by researchers from ULL groups and by national and foreign guest researchers, experts in different fields of economics, business, sociology, tourism and/or communication.
  • Justification: Enhancement of basic skills CB11 and CB14, and capabilities CA05 and CA06.
  • Content:
    • Seminar with lectures given by professors and research professionals.
    • Research seminar organized by the research lines or groups of the Doctoral Program, in which doctoral students will present either the results of their own work or recently published articles related to their research topic.
    • Debate/discussion about the content.
  • Time planning: It will be annual. It will be recommended from the first year to both full-time and part-time students.
  • Learning outcomes: Knowledge of the research lines developed in the work environment; establishing references with leading research groups at the national and international levels; reviewing the current state of the seminar topics; and stimulating critical thinking.

  • Status: Mandatory
  • Control procedure: Attendance control via signature (80%). Preparation of seminar summaries. Presentation and discussion of the most relevant aspects of the seminars attended in research group meetings, monitored by the tutor.
  • Mobility: No mobility actions are planned

Participation in Congresses and Conferences

  • Number of hours: 20 hours
  • Description: The student must attend and participate in at least one national or international conference or congress related to the research areas of the Doctoral Program and linked to their doctoral research. The selection of the conference or scientific meeting will be made according to the criteria of the thesis advisor and the availability of resources.
  • Justification: Enhancement of basic skills CB15, and capacity CA06.
  • Time planning: Full-time students: during the second or third year; part-time students: during the fourth or fifth year.
  • Learning outcomes: Demonstrate the ability to prepare, defend, and discuss a scientific presentation.
  • Language: Spanish/English
  • Nature: Optional, depending on the availability of resources for this action.
  • Control procedure: Presentation and discussion of the communication in the research line seminars. The relevant points of the discussion will be recorded in the doctoral candidate's personalized activity log. This report will be included in the doctoral candidate's personalized activity log. Report of participation in the congress, which must include:
    • Summary of the communication, including comments and discussion with the attendees.
    • Summary of other communications on related topics presented at the same congress.
    • Proof of attendance and submission of the communication.
  • Mobility: Funding for this activity can come from the university's own mobility funds, specific allocations from agreements and projects, and external calls for proposals at the local and national levels.

Research stays at other research centers

  • Number of hours: 500 hours
  • Description: A stay of at least three months, to be completed in one or two visits, at another national or international center of recognized prestige. The selection of the most suitable destination center and period of stay must be agreed upon with the thesis supervisor.
  • Justification: Enhancement of basic specific skills CB13, CB15, and capabilities CA04 and CA05.
  • Time planning: Full-time students, during the second or third year; part-time students: during the third or fourth year
  • Learning outcomes: To be able to integrate into a foreign research group and collaborate on its lines of research. To resolve specific questions raised in their research. To learn new techniques and be able to apply them in the development of their doctoral thesis. To initiate contacts for future collaborations related to the potential for theses with international distinction.
  • Language: Spanish/English
  • Nature: Optional, depending on the availability of resources for this action.
  • Control procedures:
    • Pre-stay report that includes:
      • 1. Justification of the opportunity of the stay in the context of the thesis work
      • 2. Experience of the recipient group on the topic
      • 3. Statement of the specific issues to be resolved.
      • 4. Work plan
      • 5. Source of funding for the stay.
    • Once the stay is completed:
      • 1. Report from the head of the host group where the stay took place regarding the benefits
      • 2. Personal and reasoned report on the objectives achieved and not achieved with respect to the proposed plan.
      • 3. Presentation of the progress made during the research stay for the thesis at a seminar of the research group. The report must be included in the personalized activity log.
  • Mobility: This is a voluntary activity subject to budgetary availability. Funding for this activity comes from the university's own mobility funds, specific allocations from agreements and projects, and external calls for proposals at the local, national, and international levels. Without prejudice to establishing new collaborations based on objectives, the Doctoral Program has agreements and research groups with which to collaborate for these stays.
