Since its creation, the ITB has developed a series of activities aimed at consolidating itself as a center of excellence, for which it has had the decisive support of the different government teams of the ULL and local institutions such as the Island Council of Tenerife, designing a strategic plan based on objectives with the advice of external scientific committees. 

Following an initial phase of project development and approval of the proposed constitution by the Governing Council of the University of La Laguna (ULL), the Government of the Canary Islands established the institute by Decree 11/2006 (Official Gazette of the Canary Islands, February 20, 2006). The institute's first Internal Regulations were approved by the ULL Governing Council in 2010, and an amendment was approved on December 21, 2018, to adapt its structure and governance system to the objectives pursued.
