Milestones achieved

During 2023, ITB achieved the following milestones: 

  • Following the completion of the construction of the Institute's new headquarters, multiple actions have been carried out to provide laboratory furniture, adapt and distribute laboratory spaces, as well as management, innovation and transfer areas.
  • Establishment of the IUBO platform, which encompasses scientific and technical units providing access for ITB members to general services of the Antonio González University Institute of Bio-Organic Science.
  • Incorporation of new pre- and post-doctoral researchers, technical staff and transfer staff, through the national program “Juan de la Cierva”, pre-doctoral training programs of the State Research Agency and the Government of the Canary Islands, as well as calls for proposals under research projects of the Institute's groups.
  • Dissemination of health knowledge and increased visibility at the regional, national and international levels, through the organization of scientific events in collaboration with international partner centers, such as:
  • DOKI course. Gender differences in renal disease focus on diabetes and obesity. Garachico, Tenerife (01-02/12/2023). Dr. Esteban Porrini

  • Training Days of the Biomedical Research Center in Network of Respiratory Diseases (CIBERES) and Infectious Diseases (CIBERINF), Madrid (15-16/06/2023). Dr. Carlos A. Flores Infante (Member of the Organizing Committee)
  • Awarding of research prizes, such as:
  • Manuel Rico-Bruker Prize of the Spanish Biophysical Society, awarded to Dr. Teresa Giráldez Fernández
  • XXV Young Researcher Award in Human Genetics, Spanish Association of Human Genetics, to Dr. Mª del Mar del Pino Yanes
  • Organization and participation in 24 activities for scientific dissemination (face-to-face and virtual), such as:
  • Pint of Science outreach festival at the Tenerife venue (organized simultaneously nationwide in more than 50 venues). (May 22-24, 2023). Dr. Itahisa Marcelino Rodríguez and Dr. Víctor García Tagua

  • Insane experiment. Science outreach podcast, 19 programs broadcast during 2023). Dr. Guido Santos
  • Active participation in the Master's programs in Biomedicine and Biotechnology, and the Doctoral programs in Health Sciences at ULL, with the presence of most of the research groups and lines of the Institute.
  • Defense of 14 doctoral theses, directed or co-directed by members of the institute.
  • Publication of 169 scientific articles indexed in reference databases (JCR, SJR).
  • Management as researchers responsible for +9M€ derived from research projects and agreements.
  • Organization of 11 ITB research seminars and 28 scientific courses and events, such as:
