Institute of Biomedical Technologies

Strategic planning

Following the evaluation by the scientific advisory committee in October 2019, and in accordance with the recommendations for the institute's strategic planning, together with the previous analyses carried out by the management team, the following short and medium-term objectives were formulated:

  • Commissioning of the facilities of the new building (management areas, common services laboratories and animal facility), with the management areas being operational since December 2020 and with the installation of laboratory furniture planned for the first quarter of 2022. The ITB has competed in regional and national calls for scientific infrastructure for the equipment that allows the commissioning of the animal facility area, obtaining funding from the Canary Agency for Research, Innovation and Information Society (ACIISI, Government of the Canary Islands).
  • Re-evaluation of the ITB's research program structure to adapt it to the Institute's current situation and promote synergy among research groups. In this regard, the elimination of the "Drug Development and Identification of Therapeutic Targets" program has been proposed, with the program being reorganized into three main research programs: 1) Genetic and rare diseases; 2) Chronic diseases related to aging; 3) Neurobiology and diseases of the nervous system.
  • Maintaining the requirements to access and remain in the principal investigator category and implementing measures for the recruitment of new group leaders.
  • Support for funding applications from each group and coordination of applications that promote the Institute's actions and services, including applications for infrastructure or accreditation as a structure of excellence.
  • Promotion of translational research based on synergies between basic and clinical groups and on the relationship with technology-based companies.
  • Strengthening national and international collaborations through collaboration in the organization of visits and seminars by researchers from other centers.
  • Active participation in the training of researchers by supporting the Master's programs in Biomedicine and the Doctorate in Health Sciences at ULL, promoting interactions between doctoral students and post-doctoral researchers at ITB through joint scientific sessions and establishing mechanisms to support their recruitment and scientific development.
  • Promoting the dissemination of knowledge in biomedicine and health through the organization of local outreach events and interaction with patient associations.
  • Strengthening interactions with the Bioavance Foundation of the Tenerife Island Council to achieve the above objectives.
