Master's Degree in Nautical Management and Maritime Transport

The general objective of this Master's Degree in Management in Nautical and Maritime Transport is to acquire knowledge of the different approaches to research methodologies in the field of Nautical and Maritime Transport (both quantitative and qualitative), the ability to formulate a relevant research problem and design a coherent and appropriate methodology for it. This Master's Degree is linked to the regulated profession of Captain of the Merchant Navy, according to Royal Decree 973/2009, of June 12, which regulates professional qualifications for the merchant navy (Official State Gazette of July 2, 2009).

Purpose of the Master's Degree

  • The main objectives of the Master in Management in Nautical Engineering and Maritime Transport are: Appropriate use of the different instruments and tools for both data collection and analysis, understanding of the basic elements of research and innovation, knowledge of the best-known research models, understanding of the principles of research projects, including their fundamental processes and knowledge of the different areas of R&D&I in the field of Nautical Engineering and Maritime Transport.

Who is it for?

In accordance with the provisions of Article 18 of Royal Decree 822/2021, of September 28, which establishes the organization of university education and the quality assurance procedure, to access official master's degrees, it will be necessary to hold an official Spanish university degree, or, where applicable, another Master's degree, or another degree issued by a higher education institution in a country within the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) that qualifies for access to Master's studies. Likewise, graduates from educational systems outside the EHEA may be admitted without the need for their degrees to be recognized, subject to verification by the university that they certify a level of training equivalent to the corresponding official Spanish university degrees and that they qualify for access to postgraduate studies in the country issuing the degree. Under no circumstances will admission via this route imply the recognition of the applicant's previous qualifications, nor will it be recognized for purposes other than the pursuit of the Master's degree. As this qualification provides access to the professional title of Merchant Marine Captain, the conditions for admission to the Master's degree must comply with the Resolution of the General Secretariat of Universities of January 20, 2016 (Official State Gazette of June 23), which publishes the Agreement of the Council of Universities establishing recommendations for universities to submit application forms for official qualifications in the fields of Nautical Sciences and Maritime Transport, Marine Technologies, Marine Electrical Engineering, and Naval Radioelectronics. In accordance with the provisions of section 4.2 of Annex V of the aforementioned Resolution, relating to official qualifications linked to the profession of Chief Engineer of the Merchant Navy, the conditions for access to the Master's Degree in Management in Nautical and Maritime Transport are as follows: 1. In order to access the Master's Degree linked to the profession of Captain of the Merchant Navy, the interested party must have previously acquired the skills listed in section 3 of Annex II of this Agreement establishing the recommendations for the verification of official university undergraduate degrees linked to the practice of the profession of Merchant Navy pilot, and their training must be in accordance with that established in section 5 of the aforementioned Annex II. 2. Likewise, access to the Master's Degree will be permitted when the interested party's undergraduate degree, even if it does not cover all the specific subjects of the undergraduate degree linked to the profession of Merchant Navy Pilot, complies with the proposed blocks and skills in accordance with Annex II of the aforementioned Agreement of the Council of Universities. 3 Likewise, those who hold any other degree may access this Master's degree, without prejudice to the establishment of any additional prior training that may be deemed necessary in this case.

What career opportunities are available?

  • From a professional point of view, this master's degree allows you to have the following powers once you have been qualified as a Merchant Navy Pilot:
  • a) Serve as a second-class pilot or first officer on merchant ships without power limitations.
  • b) Serve as Captain of the Merchant Navy (+24 months) or First Officer (+12 months) on merchant ships with a gross tonnage equal to or greater than 3000.
  • c) Professionally carry out all activities related to their maritime profession
