Master's Degree in Nautical Management and Maritime Transport

Access, admission and registration

In accordance with the provisions of article 18 of Royal Decree 822/2021, of September 28, which establishes the organization of university education and the procedure for ensuring its quality, in order to access official master's degrees it will be necessary to be in possession of an official Spanish university degree, or, where appropriate, have another University Master's degree, or another issued by a higher education institution in a country of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) that enables access to Master's studies in that country.

Likewise, those with degrees from educational systems outside the EHEA may access the programme without the need for their degrees to be recognised, subject to verification by the university that these certify a level of training equivalent to the corresponding official Spanish university degrees and that they entitle the applicant to access postgraduate studies in the country that issued the degree. Access via this route will not, under any circumstances, imply the recognition of the previous degree held by the interested party, nor its recognition for any purpose other than to undertake Master's studies.

As this is a qualification that gives access to the professional title of Captain of the Merchant Navy, the conditions for access to the master's degree must comply with the provisions of the Resolution of the General Secretariat of Universities, dated 20 January 2016 (BOE of 23 June) which publishes the Agreement of the Council of Universities establishing recommendations for the proposal by universities of application reports for official degrees in the fields of Nautical Science and Maritime Transport, Marine Technologies, Marine Electrotechnology and Naval Radioelectronics. In accordance with the provisions of section 4.2 of Annex V of the aforementioned Resolution, relating to official degrees linked to the profession of Captain of the Merchant Navy, the conditions for access to the Master's Degree in Nautical Management and Maritime Transport are as follows:

  1. In order to access the Master's degree linked to the profession of Merchant Navy Captain, the interested person must have previously acquired the skills listed in section 3 of Annex II of this Agreement establishing the recommendations for the verification of official university degrees linked to the exercise of the profession of Merchant Navy pilot, and their training must be in accordance with that established in section 5 of the aforementioned Annex II.
  2. Likewise, access to the Master's degree will be permitted when the interested person's degree, even if it does not cover all the specific subjects of the degree linked to the profession of Merchant Navy Pilot, complies with the proposed blocks and competencies in accordance with Annex II of the aforementioned Agreement of the Council of Universities.
  3. Likewise, those who hold any other degree may access this Master's degree, without prejudice to the establishment of any additional prior training deemed necessary in this case.

Admission will be carried out in accordance with the criteria and procedures established in the Regulations for Official Master's Degree Courses at the University of La Laguna (published in the Official Gazette of the ULL on May 14, 2020), which is in line with the rules of the European Higher Education Area and other applicable regulations.

According to the aforementioned Regulation, the Academic Committee of the Master's Degree (CAM) will be in charge of carrying out the admission process. The CAM will be composed of a minimum of five and a maximum of seven professors of the Master's Degree, including the academic director, who will act as the president of the same. Its members will be appointed by the participating university departments or institutes, in a number proportional to their teaching dedication. One of the members will be the person who exercises the academic direction of the Escuela Politécnica Superior de Ingeniería (EPSI), as the center to which the studies are assigned, or a person from the management team to whom he or she delegates.

In general, pre-registration for all ULL master's degrees requires proof of a B1 level in English according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Students who meet the mandatory academic requirements may enrol on the Master's Degree, subject to admission by CAM, in accordance with the Instruction regulating the procedures for access, admission and enrolment in official Master's Degree courses at ULL, which is published each academic year by the Directorate of the School of Doctorate and Postgraduate Studies (EDEPULL). At the time of enrolment, students must prove, through a declaration of recognition and acceptance, that they have been informed about the technological and computer resources that must be available for the correct monitoring of the virtual teaching of the degree.

The Master's Degree in Nautical and Maritime Transport Management is open to any university graduate in the field of Nautical and Maritime Transport, although it is especially aimed at graduates from Nautical Schools and other university centres that participate in the training of Merchant Navy Pilots.

The preferred qualifications are:

  • Degree in Nautical Science and Maritime Transport
  • Diploma in Maritime Navigation
  • Degree in Nautical Engineering
  • Other degree qualifications that certify training in the field of Nautical Science and Maritime Transport.

In the event that the access qualification is the Diploma in Maritime Navigation, the credits provided for in the adaptation of the Diploma in Maritime Navigation to the Degree in Nautical Science and Maritime Transport must be taken.

In their application for pre-registration, students must attach all official documents that prove they have the profile required for access, their academic record and other curriculum vitae, through which they will be evaluated for possible admission to the master's degree according to criteria of equality, merit and ability. The evaluation will be carried out by the CAM applying the following selection criteria:

  1. Degree indicated as preferred
  2. Academic record rating
  3. Other merits (professional and/or academic experience in the field of Nautical and Maritime Transport).

In the case of students with specific educational needs arising from a disability, the academic director of the master's degree will assess the need for possible curricular adaptations, itineraries or alternative studies and will prepare the corresponding proposal to the Academic Committee of the Master's Degree for approval. To do so, there is support and advice from the Program for Attention to Students with Specific Educational Support Needs (PAED), which reports to the vice-rectorate with responsibilities for students.
