History
The University Library was officially established by an agreement of the University of San Fernando's governing body in 1817. Its collection was built through successive purchases and donations until 1835, when, as a consequence of Mendizábal's ecclesiastical confiscations, the bibliographic holdings of the convents were integrated into the so-called Provincial Libraries. Thus, in 1838, the University Library also became a Provincial Library, and, when the University of San Fernando was dissolved years later and the Institute of the Canary Islands was created, it became known as the Provincial Library and Library of the Institute of the Canary Islands.
Since the suppression of the University of San Fernando in 1845, the leading figures of Tenerife never ceased to consider the possibility of its reestablishment, which was finally achieved with the royal decree of September 21, 1927, creating the 12th university district in La Laguna. With the institution re-established, the University's bibliographic collection began to take shape in the Jesuit building (now the Economic Society), while the original university collection and the collection from the convents suppressed by the Mendizábal confiscations were maintained and expanded in the former Augustinian building and later in the Canary Islands Institute.
In 1954, the University acquired its own building and dedicated a two-story pavilion to the Library. It was at this time that the two previously separate collections—that of the Institute of the Canary Islands and that of the University—could be brought together in one place. Two years later, it was decided to separate the works of Canarian authors, as well as those on topics related to the Archipelago or published in the Islands, from the rest of the collection, thus forming the Library of the Canary Islands.
