Facilitate and promote the creation of an agro-industrial biogas industry in the Canary Islands
Facilitate and promote the creation of an agro-industrial biogas industry in the Canary Islands
The management of organic waste and by-products in the Canary Islands is quite deficient in the primary sector, where there is a complete lack of awareness of the technological options for their utilization. Anaerobic digestion allows for the treatment of this waste, the production of renewable energy in the form of biogas, and the reintroduction of the waste into the production chain as high-value organic fertilizers. The objective of this project is to facilitate the development of an agro-industrial biogas industry in the Canary Islands with a technology adapted to the islands' context. To this end, three lines of action are established: (1) Studies and theoretical work: a study of the regional livestock population and the characteristics of the primary sector in the islands, a study of the factors that have hindered the development of this technology and a proposal of corrective measures, and a study of potential clients for the technology; (2) Design of a technological model suited to the islands' context and a techno-economic evaluation for interested producers of organic waste and by-products; (3) Dissemination, transfer, and funding: raising awareness of the benefits of the technology, cooperating with government agencies, businesses, and industries, and seeking funding for the activities to be carried out. Upon completion of the project, the foundations will have been laid for the sustainable development of a biogas industry in the Canary Islands, facilitating the establishment of biogas plants on the islands with the highest livestock production and making the University of La Laguna (ULL) a key participant and stakeholder in this development.
