López Alonso is currently an emeritus professor of Traumatology and Orthopedics at the University of Alcalá de Henares, where he held the aforementioned Chair and the Deanship of the Faculty of Medicine from 1989 until his retirement.
His relationship with the University of La Laguna began in 1982, when he passed a competitive examination for the position of University Lecturer and head of the Orthopedics and Traumatology Department at the University Hospital of the Canary Islands. He later obtained the Chair of Traumatology and Orthopedics, which he held until 1989, before moving to Alcalá.
